Dyscalculia Coaching

Dyscalculia affects number sense, math reasoning, and remembering steps in multi-part problems. We help students build confidence through clear instruction and repeated practice.

Why Dyscalculia Catches Families Off Guard

Dyscalculia is sometimes called the math version of dyslexia, and it is estimated to affect a similar share of students, yet it is far less studied and understood. Parents and teachers are often genuinely surprised, since a student can read, write, and speak beautifully while still struggling significantly with numbers.

A common pattern is memorizing a rule in one narrow context and then misapplying it elsewhere, for example, learning that a "+" sign means to count forward, and then trying to count forward for a subtraction problem too. Without the underlying concept, small early confusions in place value or computation compound over time, eventually surfacing as struggles with fractions, and later, algebra. Catching and addressing this early matters far more in math than most families realize.

How learning is affected

1

Number relationships can feel abstract or difficult to hold in memory.

2

Multi-step math work may become confusing without visual structure.

3

Support helps students move from frustration to steady progress.

How We Support Students With Dyscalculia

Number Sense

We build genuine comfort with quantity, comparison, and meaning, the foundation everything else in math is built on.

Concrete-to-Abstract Teaching

New concepts start with hands-on manipulatives, move to pictures and diagrams, and only then move to abstract notation, so students understand why a method works, not just the steps.

Step-by-Step Math

We break multi-step problems into small, sequential pieces and practice each one individually before combining them, rather than presenting the whole process at once.

Math Confidence

We reduce anxiety and help students stay engaged, focusing on mastering one solid approach fully before introducing alternative strategies or shortcuts.

Beyond working directly with students, we also offer 1:1 parent coaching, helping families build awareness of their child's profile and adapt their parenting and support style at home so progress continues between sessions.
