Washington State Home-Based Instruction

In Washington State, home-based instruction is a legal and recognized form of education governed by OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction). Families who choose to homeschool must file an annual declaration of intent and meet certain supervision and curriculum requirements.

Homeschooling Options in Washington

There are several legal ways to educate a child at home in Washington. Here is a quick overview of each and how a family typically qualifies. We can help you decide which fits your situation.

Home-Based Instruction (HBI)

The parent directs the child's education at home. To qualify, a parent files an annual declaration of intent with their local district and meets the state's supervision requirements (such as being qualified to teach, working with a certificated person, or completing a parent-qualifying course).

Private School Extension (Umbrella / Cover School)

The family enrolls under an approved private school that oversees the homeschool program. The child is technically a private school student, so the umbrella school handles records and compliance rather than the family filing independently.

Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) / Parent Partnership

A public school program built for home-based families. Students remain publicly enrolled and work with a certificated teacher on a written learning plan, often gaining access to classes, materials, and funding. Families qualify by enrolling through a district that offers an ALE or parent partnership program.

Digital / Virtual Learning Programs

Full online schools, public or private, that deliver curriculum and instruction remotely. The school provides the coursework and teachers; families qualify by enrolling their student, much like registering for any school.

Parent Coaching & Education

Homeschooling is as much about the parent as the student. We offer 1:1 coaching to help parents feel confident in the role of teacher, from lesson delivery and pacing to keeping a child motivated and managing the day without burning out.
