Kindergarten Readiness Checklist
Every child develops at their own pace, but here's a general snapshot of the skills schools look for heading into Kindergarten, grouped into four areas of development.
Cognitive Development
Pre-math, thinking skills, and concept development
- Recognizes colors, shapes, and numbers 1–10
- Counts to five and beyond (four to ten objects)
- Sorts and groups items by color, shape, or size
- Understands positional concepts (in/out, on/off, front/back)
- Understands comparisons (bigger, smaller, heaviest, lightest)
Emotional & Social Development
Emotional skills, social skills, self-help and self-regulation
- Handles self-care tasks (dressing, toileting, utensils)
- Uses words to manage frustration and name emotions
- Shares, takes turns, and follows rules and routines
- Separates from parents without distress
- Interacts appropriately with peers and adults
Language Development
Pre-reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills
- Speaks in complete sentences of five to six words
- Retells stories and recites nursery rhymes
- Attempts to write letters, numbers, and their name
- Identifies some alphabet letters and sight words
- Listens to stories without interrupting
Motor Skill Development
Fine and gross motor skills, physical development
- Holds and uses crayons or scissors appropriately
- Completes puzzles and traces basic shapes
- Walks a line, up/down stairs, and on tiptoes
- Runs, jumps, skips, and balances on one foot
- Bounces or kicks a ball, pedals a tricycle
