Also Preparing for the PSAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT is both a practice SAT and the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It is a College Board test offered once per year, typically in October, and administered through a student's school rather than independently. Students do not register on their own — their school coordinates testing and students opt in through their counseling office. The test is computer-based and follows the same digital adaptive format as the SAT.
Students may also take the PSAT 8/9 (grades 8-9) or PSAT 10 (grade 10) depending on what their school offers. Scores from the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade are used for National Merit Scholarship consideration, and strong PSAT prep doubles as a valuable head start on SAT readiness.
About the SAT & How to Register
The SAT is a standardized college admissions test administered by College Board that measures skills in Reading and Writing and Math on a 400-1600 scale. It is fully digital and taken exclusively on a computer through College Board's Bluebook app, with no paper-and-pencil option. The test is adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second module adjusts based on a student's performance in the first. Students register at collegeboard.org (the PSAT is registered through the same account, coordinated by your school).
- The SAT is offered several times each year, usually around the months of March, May, June, August, October, November, and December (for example, in 2026 test dates fall in each of these months).
- Registration typically opens well in advance, and the deadline usually closes about 2 to 3 weeks before the test date, so it is best to register early.
- The standard registration fee is approximately $68, with fee waivers available for eligible students.
- You can combine your best section scores across test dates (Superscoring), and about 95% of students take the SAT more than once.
- Scores are typically released about 2 weeks after the test date.
- Scores are curved based on the difficulty of the specific test and the performance of the students who took it, so no single test date is inherently easier or harder.
